Back to the Womb

This is the beginning of a larger research project on luxury bunkers. It explores how some of the wealthiest individuals are relocating to New Zealand, purchasing citizenship, and constructing massive bunkers covering up to 500,000 square meters.

These elites are grappling with the question of how to ensure their security and maintain their lifestyles when an apocalypse comes, when money no longer holds any value. At the same time, companies are developing luxury bunker resorts designed specifically for doomsday scenarios. They market these extravagant shelters to potential buyers with perks like a complimentary Porsche. The promise is that, once the world has collapsed and most people are gone, you can emerge from your bunker behind the wheel of your sports car, ready to drive through the scorched remains of civilization.

The title Back to the Womb is inspired by Douglas Rushkoff and his book Survival of the Richest, in which he describes how these wealthy men are creating their own “digital wombs”, retreating underground to live in artificial environments that mimic the safety and insulation of the womb itself.
